The Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESty) wanted to bring its net zero carbon policy to the public, and to make people feel it, not just read it.
Our approach
We wrote a love story. Bang grows up in a Malay fishing village by the sea, and Nun grows up upriver in the forest. They meet as children at a halfway market, where she throws a red saga seed at him and he tries to dodge it. Life takes them down different paths, and the film asks a simple question: what does it really mean to make life better?
The story is built around molong, the indigenous principle of taking only what you need and leaving enough for the future. It was shot over seven days on the coast, the rivers and the forests of Sarawak, in Sarawak Malay, native languages and Bahasa Malaysia, with English subtitles. A documentary unit then hands the story over to real Sarawakians and the commitments they’ve made.
